FAQ
The Answers You Seek
What is Yoga Therpy?
Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga.
- IAYT Educational Standard for the Training of Yoga Therapists

What does that mean, though? Simply put - as yoga therapists, we work with our clients individually with the concerns they wish to work on (anxiety, depression, scoliosis, back issues, grief, and more).

We take yogic practices (breathing, postures, and meditation, for example) to help them find a pathway towards healing.
How is Yoga Therapy different from taking a Yoga class?
They're both fantastic and beneficial in their own ways. That being said, in yoga therapy, after the initial consultation, we take specific yogic practices and apply them to the concerns you are coming in the door with.

In a yoga class, poses (and breath) are combined to form a sequence. Classes (both group and individual) still seek a goal.

The difference is in the application. Yoga therapy is more individualized and often for specific conditions. In private yoga sessions, you can get a personalized touch, however the education will be different if seeking private sessions from a yoga instructor versus a yoga therapist.
What types of conditions does yoga/therapy help?
Yoga can be very beneficial for those struggling with both mental health and physical ailments. Some of these include (and are certainly not limited to) anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, autoimmune diseases, insomnia, arthritis, back pain and more. Yoga also helps us reconnect back to ourselves.
What should I expect from an initial consultation?
I usually block out 1.5 hours for this. We will review several facets of your life, which include but are not limited to, your lifestyle, sleep, eating habits, etc.

What this also includes are different practices for home use and at the end of the session, a write up of these practices.

If there are any extra practices or resources that are easily accessible, these will be included in a follow up email.
What do follow up sessions look like?
In future sessions, we begin by reviewing the practices you have been completing: what has been working, have you been hitting any roadblocks, what hasn't worked, etc.

We will discuss these to get an idea of your road so far.

There is no good time table for this, however I like to keep an eye on the time so that I can leave room to teach any new practices and allow for any questions. This will take the rest of the time.
This is especially important when we get into techniques involving other breathwork or yoga postures where I like to make sure you are feeling safe, comfortable and are getting the best alignment. Your safety is important to me; physically, mentally and emotionally and so I don't like to rush any teachable moments whenever possible.
What do I need?
Appointments can be held either virtually or in my Liverpool, NY office.

Space: for an initial session and most subsequent sessions, it is helpful to make sure you have some space for yourself to "set up". This can be done best by lying down wherever you want to set up and stretch your arms out in a "T" like form. See if you have a comfortable amount of space to do this. This is usually plenty of room.

The rest (props, what to use for a mat if you don't have one, etc.) can be discussed in a first session.

It's always best to wear comfortable clothing. Something you feel you can move in. Also clients (and myself!) have found it helpful to have a shirt you can tuck in for those times you may fold over. Comfort is key!
How long does it take to work?
Safety is important and because yoga is a slower and incremental approach, it can therefore be seen as a safer approach.

It's important to note that yoga practice and yoga therapy does take time and it takes an active part for you. Practices will be given to do on your own and it's up to you on how often you engage in these practices.

Some practices will offer benefit quicker than others and it's important to note that each person's circumstances are unique.
